Cutting 6063 extruded sunflower heat sink profiles without bent fins
Shuangdeyu Precision Machinery (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. has cut 6063 extruded aluminum heat sink sunflower profiles for a large number of customers. Whatever their end product, the same three problems come up in the first conversation: bent or curled fins at the cut edge, a rough cut face on the solid center, and scratches picked up during clamping and handling. Once the cut face is out of tolerance, every step behind it pays for it, CNC machining, drilling, tapping and anodizing included, in both cost and lead time.

For this work we recommend the SDY-QFW550-B fully automatic aluminum cutting machine.
Who this machine is cutting for
Our customers in this application come from LED lighting, industrial control and power electronics, and new energy vehicle supply chains. Part sizes range from small sections to profiles over a hundred millimeters tall, and the range is not limited to sunflower shapes. Other heat sink geometries are cut on the same machine.
When the stock is small, the SDY-Q180 automatic aluminum cutting machine is also used. Across this customer group, however, the SDY-QFW550-B remains the most frequently specified model.
What keeps the cut face clean
Servo sawing feed instead of impact feeding. Both the sawing feed and the material feed run on 1.0 kW servo motors. Feed rate is set and held, which is what thin fins need. A fast, uncontrolled entry is what folds a fin over or leaves a torn face on the solid core.
Micro-lubrication, dry chips. The blade is cooled by micro-lubrication (MQL) rather than flood coolant. Parts come off the machine without coolant residue, which removes a cleaning step before anodizing.
Accuracy that holds downstream. Cutting accuracy is ± 0.1 mm with a square, clean cut face, so drilling, tapping and fixturing downstream run from a stable datum instead of from a reworked edge.
One machine, a wide range of profiles. Maximum cutting width is 400 mm and maximum cutting height 170 mm, with a 550 mm blade that is downward compatible to smaller diameters. Sunflower profiles and irregular heat sink shapes can share the same machine without a second setup.
No-remnant configuration. A 750 W tail servo is fitted on the no-remnant version, holding the remnant under 1 mm, so a long bar yields more finished parts.
Variable spindle speed. The spindle runs at 2850 rpm with variable frequency control, so speed can be matched to the alloy and wall thickness being cut.

FAQ
Can this machine cut sunflower heat sink profiles without bending the fins? The sawing feed is servo driven and the feed rate is set per job, so the blade enters the fin section at a controlled speed rather than in one impact. Fin condition also depends on wall thickness and blade condition, which is why we ask for a sample or a drawing before confirming the setup.
Is coolant used, and will parts need cleaning before anodizing? No flood coolant is used. The blade is cooled by micro-lubrication, so chips come off dry and the cut face carries no coolant residue.
What is the largest profile it can take? 400 mm in width and 170 mm in height. A 550 mm blade is standard, and smaller blades can be fitted for smaller sections.
What if our parts are smaller than that? Smaller stock is often cut on the SDY-Q180. Send us the section drawing and cut length and we will confirm which model fits.
Does it come with a no-remnant version? Yes. The no-remnant configuration adds a 750 W tail servo and holds the remnant under 1 mm.
Tell us what you are cutting
Send us the material, the section drawing or a sample photo, the cut length and the tolerance you need. We will come back with the model that fits and a cycle time estimate. The same support covers copper and aluminum profiles of other shapes.
